Beekman Place



Beekman Place is a small neighborhood on the east side of Manhattan, New York City. This tranquil enclave in the East Fifties is set up against the river, and is known for its water views and classic apartment houses. Since the early development of Manhattan, Beekman Place has enjoyed a quiet elegance that makes it one of Manhattan's most sought after addresses. An enclave of old money, the hill was home to members of the Rockefeller family and Huntington Hartford. Theatrical personalities also enjoyed the high life on Beekman Place, among them Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne, Ethel Barrymore, Katharine Cornell and Irving Berlin.

It is an area that ranges in socioeconomic diversity from the upper middle class and the "working rich" business executives to extraordinarily rich families whose names are familiar to the American public and who own large town houses in the area, often actually several townhouses combined to form colossal mansions of understated spectacularity.

The site of Beekman Place refers to the location on which the Beekman family built its then summer house. Their main lodging was on Beekman Street, in Downtown Manhattan.
